Mourning elegance! In 1861, Queen Victoria's mother and husband died. She became somewhat obsessed with mourning and this ushered in a period of black clothing and jewelry in the fashion world. The wearing of black did not necessarily mean that the wearer was in mourning. This hat is a very extravagant antique Edwardian hat created from black velvet and black ostrich plumes. Embellished on On either side of the hat at the base of the plumes on one side and beneath the plumes on the other with black netting, black sequins and black glass beads. Extremely fine condition with no damage or repairs. There is some wear to the velvet along the edges but the wire is not coming through. No tears or holes. The plumes are in wonderful condition with no missing parts. Partially lined in black velvet and black fabric which is in perfect condition. The interior at the crown is not lined and I can't tell if this is the way it was originally made or if part of the lining is missing. No milliner's label. Size Large, 23 inches. Just right for 'big hair'. If you don't have 'big hair' you will need a hatpin or two to hold this millinery delight on your head. Comes with a hatbox. (Not antique)
