Elegant gold filigree! A very ornate Victorian hatpin comprised of gold-washed brass filigree inset with pearls and a piece of faceted amethyst glass. The tiny pearls may possibly be glass although there is no loss of the pearly finish which is unusual for a piece this old. The faceted amethyst glass is in pristine condition with no chips, scratches, cracks or flea-bites. There is some loss of gold and the tarnished brass beneath shows through is some areas. The stem is gold-washed silver. As with the top, there is loss of gold to the stem as well. I would caution you against polishing this piece to shine the brass to match the gold as this would remove more of the gold. The older gold plating techniques used in the Victorian era created a delicate layer of gold that can easily be removed.
