Somber but beautiful. The reason for the creation of the mourning glass objects of the Victorian era is not a cheerful subject but the objects that were created were incredibly beautiful. This long stemmed silver mourning glass hatpin is no exception. The top is molded glass, flattened like a button and quite large in diameter. The stem does test positive for silver but is not marked sterling. Excellent condition with no damage to the black glass top or the stem. The stem is slightly tarnished. I have a link on my Link Exchange page to an interesting article written by Maureen Timm and published in The Antique Shoppe newspaper on the history of hatpins.
