Victorian Bohemian Garnet Earrings

Simply elegant. This delicate pair of antique Victorian Bohemian garnet earrings sparkle with the inner fire that is characteristic of the garnets mined in the mountains of Bohemia. The garnets are rose cut and prong set. The metal appears to be gold vermeil (gold over silver). The settings are open backed to allow the gems to sparkle more brilliantly. Garnets mined in Bohemia are of the variety called pyrope (from the Greek words pyr for "fire" and ops for "eye"). Of a rare high quality found in Central Bohemia in the north of the Czech Republic, the Bohemian garnet’s color ranges from fiery-red to ruby-red. Jewely set with Bohemian garnets was very popular in the 19th century. This pair of earrings is in Extremely Fine condition with no damage or repairs. No missing or chipped garnets. The star is 1/2 inch in diameter and the garnets graduate in size from 3mm at center to 1mm around the edges. Hallmarked but very difficult to read due to wear. For pierced ears. Gift boxed. (The box is not antique or vintage.)
