A charming Edwardian hat created from black horsehair straw with lots of ruffles. In 1861, Queen Victoria's mother and husband died. She became somewhat obsessed with mourning and this ushered in a period of black clothing and jewelry in the fashion world. The wearing of black did not necessarily mean that the wearer was in mourning. This hat was undoubtedly the height of fashion. Lined with black fabric. The gold-toned & faux pearl hatpin is not original to the hat. Mint condition with no damage to the horsehair straw or the lining. A rare find indeed. Size Large, 23 inches. Just perfect for those of you with 'big hair'. But, the design is such that those of us not endowed with 'big hair' can keep it on our heads. The hatpin is not necessary but does add a bit of relief to all of the black. No milliner's label.
